  2. Chapter six dealt with the wrestling matches, and it showed how people in the village enjyoed watching the matches. Time quickly passed by because the observers were enjoying the match and all, and also because each match was actually very quick. The only time the audiences became relaxed was in between each matches, "The air, which had been stretched taut with excitement, relaxed again. It was as if water had been poured on the tightened skin of a drum. Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them" (Achebe 48). This was how serious people in the villages were about the wrestling match because it "determines" each one's strengths and their "social rankings". It actually shows how the rankings of strength can change over the course of time, and that even if you are being viewed as the strongest at the time, that strength is not everlasting. Anytime, others can take over the power, and this was what probably Okonkwo most feared.

Nwoye is now starting to be mature, by its three years of influence by his new "big brother", Ikefuma. "He made his feel grown-up; and they no longer spent the evenings in mother's hut while she coocked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi, or watched him as he tapped his palm tree for the evening wine" (Achebe 52). This sentence shows that Nwoye is now grown up and not weak and lazy anymore.
Nwoye wanted to please his father, Okonkwo, by growing to be a strong man who is able to rule over the household like Okonkwo does. "He wanted Nwoye to grow into a tough young man capable of ruling his father's household when he was dead and gone to joing the ancestors. He wanted him to be a prosperous man, having enough in his barn to feed the ancestors with regular sacrifices" (Achebe 52-53). He tried to make his father pleased by grumbling about women, and listening to Okonkwo's masculine stories of violence and bloodshed rather than those fairlytales he used to love listening from his mother. This way, Nwoye could make his father pleased with him. Okonkwo was actually very please about Ikefuma, who have hugely influenced the weak and lazy little boy to become a man.
I am not actually surprised with the action Okonkwo did toward his "son", Ikefuma and I could predict that to happen when Ezeudu came to see Okonkwo. This scene was actually a forshadow that Okonkwo was going to lend a hand to the death of Ikefuma. This action could be predicted becasue of his personality as mentioned in chapter two, "Perhaps down in his heart Okonkwo was not a cruel man. But his whole life was dominated by fear, the fear of failure amd of weakness" (Achebe 13). He feared to be thought weak, for not being able to kill a boy. He decided to kill Ikefuma for his "benefit".

  3. 1) The wrestling match excited the audience and brought enjoyable atmosphere. “The huge voice of the crowd then rose to the sky and in every direction. It was even heard in the surrounding villages” (Achebe 49). This implies that the crowds were very enthusiastic that time passed really fast since each match grabbed audience’s attention and motivated them to continue watch every second of it. Through the village, wrestling match is a great event where child into adults attend to prove their leadership.

    2) Nwoye has made a rapid growth. Through Ikefumena’s influence, Nwoye developed to be more tough and manly. “That was the king of story that Nwoye loved. But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women’s stories” (Achebe 54). Nwoye is starting to respect his father and trying to answer his demands for his son.

    3) Nwoye definitely wants to please his father. “Nwoye would feign annoyance and grumble aloud about women and their troubles” (Achebe 52) He tries to hide his moral feeling and fake it so that his father will be proud of him. Nwoye maybe wants to feel love from his father and the only way to make him proud of him is to be ideal son.

    4) It is not hard to predict Okonkwo’s action towards Ikemefuma. “To show affection was a sign of weakness” (Achebe 28). Okonkwo knows that every person have feelings towards something. This time he met Ikemefuma who turns out to be his ideal son. When Umuofia decided to kill Ikemefuma, Okonkwo was surprised. But he decided to kill him as part of ritual.

  5. 1). When the drummers stopped drumming for a short period of time, they were hot and sweaty. This would imply that they had been drumming for a very very long time. "The drummers stopped for a brief rest before the real matches. Their bodies shown with sweat, and they took up fans and began to fan themselves."(Achebe p48)

2). Nwoye had grown up in to a man rapidly do to the influence of Ikefuma. He complains about woman which in Okonkwo's mind is a sign of a true man who can look after his clan.

3). Nwoye want's to please his father. "He knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for woman's stories." (Achebe p54) This demonstrates that Nwoye was trying to show interest in men's stories rather then the woman and children stories that he favored more.

4). No I'm not surprised at Okonkwo's action. In Okonkwo's mind being a man is the most important thing in the world. In his perspective, showing signs of weakness is a sign of failure as a man. So that haven been said, Okonkwo's actions would fit his personality.

  6. The quote for number 2- "Nothing pleased Nwoye now more then to be sent for by his mother or another of his fathers wives to do one of those difficult and masculine tasks in the home, splitting wood, or pounding food." (Achebele p52)

the quote for number 4- "Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak." (Achebebe p61)

    1. "As soon as the two boys closed in, one of them did something which no one could describe because it had been as quick as a flash" (Achebe 47). This quote describes the passing time during the wrestling. Achebe describes briefly about the beginning of the wrestling of fifteen to sixteen years old boys. Then later, Achebe describes about the finals which Maduka claims the victory in the split second.

    2. Since Ikefuma came into Okonkwo's family, the Ikefuna's teaching and influences changed Nwoye. From Okonkwo's point of view, Nwoye changed in a good way, which he desired. Before the change of Nwoye, he had lazy and Unokaish personality. Then later on after Ikefuna came, Nwoye's personality has changed. Later Nwoye is more developed, and he is much man like than before. He sometimes even grumbles about woman. "Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son's developement, and he knew it was due to Ikefuna" (Achebe 31).

    3. Since Ikefuna has been in Okonkwo's family for three years, the distance between them are closer. Ikefuna even considers Okonkwo as his father. Ikefuna obeys Okonkwo and by helping him raise the yams, and listening to his stories in his obi. Actually Ikefuna deeply respects Okonkwo as father, and that's why he pleases him. When he is sentenced to go back to his village, somewhat he gets worried. Though since Okonkwo is beside Ikfuna, he felt confortable. "Although he had felt uneasy at first, he was not afraid now Okonkwo walked behind him. He could hardly imagine that Okonkwo was not his real father" (Achebe 59).

    4. Yes, I was surprised with the action which Okonkwo took, because Oknonkwo seems to be pleased when Ikefuna comes and changes Nwoye in a good way. Ikefuna also obeys and work hard for Okonkwo, which he really appreciated. Ikefuma called Okonkwo father, and that showed how close they were. The old man also came up to Okonkwo to convince him not to kill Ikefuna. Later, when Ikefuna is attacked he asks Okonkwo for help, but then he kills Ikefuna just for his pride. I was very surprised with how Okonkwo can easily kill Ikefuna without any hesitation. "Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid to being thought week" (Achebe 61).

  8. 1. The time was quick, people enjoyed the wrestling matches. “It was as if water had been poured on the tightened skin of a drum. Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them” (Achebe 48). This sentence describes how people were into the wrestling matches, and they were really enjoying it, and once they had a break, now they began realizing about the person next to them.

    2. Nwoye is starting to grow and acquire man knowledge. “... grumbling about woman” (Achebe 53). As the novel tells that his father, Okonkwo, was happy about how he grumbles about woman, it describes that it is the first step toward improvement to become a man who can rule the house and his women.

    3. Nwoye knew that his father wants him to change, and become a man, “And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him” (Achebe 54). I think, in this sentence, it kind of shows that he wants to get attention from his father, and see his smile that his happy about him, and get it into one’s head to try to be better man for his father, and himself.

    4. Yes, and No. The reason I said “Yes” is because, Ikemefuna loved him so much that he even called him his “father”. On the other hand, the reason I said “No” is because I think Okonkwo things that man should not be afraid to do anything, but needs to be a mankind which people will think and say that “he is the real man”, which means show people his power. “He was afraid of being thought weak” (Achebe 61).

  9. 1. The wrestling match began at noon and ended after dusk. " Dusk was already approaching when their contest began" (Achebe 50) However in between the author only described about the intense wrestling match and little about the time. Instead, he showed time passing through the tired drummers and the tension in the air and from everyone's concentration in the game. "The drummers stopped for a brief rest before the real matches."..."The air, which had been stretched taut with excitement, relaxed again."..."Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them." (Achebe 48) These show that everyone was so absorbed into the game that they forgot about the people and things around them and also about the time which passed so quickly.

2.Nwoye is definitely growing up with the great influence of Ikemefuna who he looks up to very much. He had changed rapidly in that he no longer spends time in his mother's hut but spends more time with his father and likes to observe him. "Nothing pleased Nwoye more than to be sent for by his mother or another of his father's wives to do one those difficult and masculine tasks at home, like splitting wood, or pounding food." (Achebe 52)This opposed to his earlier laziness and lack of enthusiasm in labor. It also stated that he would grumble and grow annoyed of women and their troubles, which in Okonkwo's perspective, was what a great man should do because it meant that he would soon be able to control his women-folk.

    3. Nwoye wanted to please his father by feigning that he no longer cared for women's stories, which he used to enjoyed the most, because then his father wouldn't beat or rebuke him.
This is where it showed. “And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him.” (Achebe 54)

    4. I actually already knew that Okonkwo was going to kill Ikemefuna from reading the critic reviews of this book so it wasn't really a surprise. However, even if I didn't know what was going to happen, it wouldn't have surprised me because Okonkwo had always been a person with little mercy when it came to fighting and above all, his greatest fear was to show his weakness. Although it was clear that Okonkwo didn't want to kill Ikemefuna but his fear of being looked down as a weak guy who couldn't even take down a kid got over him and he made the move.

    ReplyDelete
  10. The passing of time is represented by sheer speed of the wrestling I think. All of the moves are done at the speed of light, and everyone in the crowd had their whole mind focused on the match. "Quick as the lightning of Amadiora, Okafo faised his right leg and swung it over his rival's head. The crowd burst into a thunderous roar" (Achebe 50).

Yes, Nwoye does start to grow up with the help of Ikemefuna as his role model. Nwoye starts to spend more time watching Okonkwo make wine, and he also starts to love being told to do very masculine jobs. "He was like an elder brother to Nwoye, and from the very first seemed to have kindled a new fire in the younger boy. He made him feel grown-up; and they no longer spent the evenings in mother's hut while she cooked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi, or watched him as he tapped his palm tree for the evening wine" (Achebe 52).

Yes, Nwoye does want to please his father, and he does please him well "Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son's development" (Achebe 52). Nwoye still liked the stories that his mother told him, but he wanted to please his father so he would sit in Okonkwo's obi and listen to more masculine stories, which made Nwoye feel more grown-up and manly. "But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women's stories" (Achebe 54).

After our learning about Okonkwo, and his fear of looking weak or unsuccessful, I am not surprised by his action against Ikemefuna. It is just like him to kill someone he loves in return for pride. "Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak" (Achebe 61).

1)Their style of festivals put in music in every single procession. "The drummers took up their sticks and the air shivered and grew tense like a tightened bow"(Achebe 49).There were two teams, which is created by 6 men. For every match, they exchange the wrestlers. The rules were not properly in the book, however, when one of the wrestlers was thrown, all the audience cried and screamed. At the end, the leader of the team came. They grabbed on each other, and one side crouched down to get the apponent's leg to throw him down on the ground. However, the apponent already noticed about that, and kicked right on the man's face. To praise the victory, people started to sing a song.Interestingly, this whole process used only two full pages. I personally imagine that the author wanted to explain how much the villagers were over joying and what did each villagers thought. Similar as myself, I think human has tendency to complex their memory and describe with short sentences. Also, this story is narrative, but I personally think that the person who is narrating was watching the festival too, so to make realistic, this event was "packed" into 2 full pages.

2)The book doesn't describe how much Nwoye grew up, although the change of his lifestyle is precisely written. As prediction, Nwoye became old enough to do difficult and physical labors. "Okonkwo was inwardly pleased as his son's development"(Achebe 52).Adding onto, Nwoye was anticipated by his father to take all the response of the whole family."He(Okonkwo)wanted Nwoye to grow into a tough young man capable of ruling his father's household when he as dead"(Achebe 54).

3)Nwoye believed that being violent and strong was good. He used to conflict himself by recalling the stories that he heard from his mother and his father's wives. However, now Nwoye describes those stories are foolish. Instead he started to listen his father more.
"So Nwoye and Ikemefuna would listen to Okonkwo's stories about tribal wars, or how, years ago"(Achebe 54). This quote shows a respect toward Okonkwo. In other words, Nwoye is actually pleased with his father now.

4)When I see through everybody's responces and says that it wasn't surprising. I can't say that it was "surprising", however it was interesting. "It descended on him(Ewoye) again, this felling, when his father walked in, that night after killing Ikemefuna"(Achebe 62). Usually Okonkwo "translate" his fear to rage, thats why I think it's interesting. Okonkwo must be affraid or feared his disteny of suffer because Ikemefuna was killed by his own tribe, but Ewoye didn't described his father at all, which I think that Okonkwo didn't take any action to reduced the rage. If I am right, Okonkwo can't control himself like things he have done before during the Week of Peace. Although, looks like Okonkwo controled himself this time. I want to know how did Okonkwo controlled himself.

  12. 1. "Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them." (Achebe 48) This quote was found in the middle part of the story, and they finally looked around and checked who was sitting or standing next to them. Usually, in our generation we sit with who we came with of our friends, but this time they didn't care about who they watch with. Everyone was so in to the game, men, women and children.

    2. Yes, Nwoye is growing up with the influence by Ikemefuna. "Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son's development, and he knew it was due to Ikemrfuna."(Achebe 52) In the beginning of this book, it said that Nwoye was a bit week and had a sad face, but in this paragraph, it said that he grew and became tougher.

    3. "he feigned that he no longer cared for women's stories. And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased." (Achebe 54) After he became manly and didn't go to his mother's place and listened to her foolish story, Okonkwo stopped beat him up. He became the man that Okonkwo expected, os Nwoye pleased his father.

    4. Yes, I was surprised because I thought Okonkwo liked Ikemefuna because he is the one who changed Nwoye to bacome the man who Okonkwo wanted him to be. "He was afraid of being thought weak." (Achebe 61) But by reading this story, I kind of get why he did such thing like that because he didn't wanted to becoward like his father.

    ReplyDelete
  13. 1) A passing time that represents the wrestling match that I found was 'The two teams were ranged facing each other across the clear space(Achebe 49).' The reason I think that this quote represents the wrestling match is because that is when you know the fight will start to begin, see your opponent and start getting ready.

    2) I think that in this chapter Nwoye is starting to get more tough. I think that he is influenced by Ikemefuna and started to think he wants to be like him and also that he is acting different (acting more grown up) than from the beginning of the story.

    3) I think that Nwoye wants to do both, I think he wants to please his father and yet in another wat he doesn't want to please his father but if he did his father start to think of him as a man like Ikemefuna. Also you know that he still wants to be that little boy because even though he kinda likes the stories that his father tells him, he misses the stories that his mother would always tell him.

    4) Yes and no, because Okonkwo always thought of Ikemefuna as his son and always liked him. Also I am not suprised because he always afraid to show that he is weak and thinks that he is tough and he always beats his wives up too.

    1. The wrestling match excited the audience, gender nor age matter. They all shared the same excitement that time passed extremely fast. “ ‘I did not know it was you,’ Ekwefi said to the woman who had stood shoulder to shoulder with her since the beginning of the matches” (Achebe 48). The audience looked around and noticed who was next to them when they had the rest before the real matches.
    2. Nwoye is going through growth from the influence of Ikemefuna. Nwoye is changing. “…they no longer spent the evenings in mother’s hut while she cooked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi…”(Achebe 52). Nwoye has grown more mature and more like a man.
    3. Nwoye want to please his father for sure. “That was the king of story that Nwoye loved. But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women’s stories” (Achebe 54). To answer Okonkwo’s expectations, Nwoye stops to be honest to himself and fakes it. By answering what Okonkwo wants.
    4. I was surprised from Okonkwo’s action. For Okonkwo, Ikemefuna was his ideal son. Also Ikemefuna called him father, which showed how close they were. But Okonkwo’s life was based on fear. “Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak”(Achebe 61).

  15. Chapter six is about a wrestling match that happens in the village every year. People include woman, children and slaves come to watch this game. Wrestling match has a deep meaning to Okownkwo because he got fame by throwing Amalinze the Cat when he was only eighteen years old. But now Okonkwo watches the wrestling game, and young boys around sixteen matches each other. "The contest beagan with boys of fifteen or sixteen."(Achebe 47)This shows that time has passed generationally, and now instead of a bit old Okonkwo, new young boys come out for wrestling.

Nwoye starts to grow up phsically and metally, due to Ikemefuna. Ikemefuna is older than Nwoye, and knows alot of things than Nwoye. And Nwoye follows him as like a blood-shared older brother. As Nwoye grows up, he thinks more deeply, and now knows that what does Okonkwo wants him to be, a strong man. Okonkwo likes both of children is becoming a real strong man. However, Nwoye just pretends like he's a strong man. Inwardly, he was yet a boy."Nwoye knew that it was right to be msculine and to be violent, but somehow he still peferred the stories that his mother used to tell."(Achebe 53)

Nwoye wants to please his father, it's actually more like he wants to please his father to be not beaten by him. "And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women's stories. And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him."(Achebe 54)To please his father, Nwoye grumbled about women, and listens to his father's war story even though he doesn't really like to hear it.

It was one of the main event thorugh the story. I could see Okonkwo's climax of fear. He was indeed very afraid of looking like a weak man. "Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew hs machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak."(Achebe 61)We've learned what's Okonkwo's biggest fear and his behaviors. It wasn't really surprised when he killed Ikemefuma since his beggest fear is being like his father, weak man. But it was surprised after Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna, he actually acts a bit down with hanging limp.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Chapter six talked about the villagers watching the wrestling matches. This chapter gives an idea that the whole ‘ilo’ is an exciting entertainment and brought good atmosphere for each of the villagers. At last the two teams danced into the circle and the crowd roared and clapped. The drums rose to a frenzy. The people surged forward’’ (Achebe 47). It explains how that festival’s situation was like. There were people clapping and there were voices of people from every direction. When the two teams started dancing, it gave many people’s attention and brought them with a great motivation of being enthusiastic.

Nyowe changed a lot during this three years since Ikemefuna joined in to his family. Ikefuma had brought him to be more mature and became more like a man, which his father, Okonkwo had been waiting for. “Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son’s development, and he knew it was due to Ikemefuna” (Achebe 52) Okonkwo wanted Nyowe to be a strong capable man who is able to take care of his whole family as well as his ancestors.

Yes, Nyowe wants to please his father because he is expected from his father that he will become like Okonkwo when he grows up as well as replacing Okonkwo when he dies. “But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man.” (Achebe 54) So even though Nyowe really loved his mother’s friendly stories, he has to follow the right way, which is to listen to man-like stories to become strong and have ideas of what real men are rather than just listening to happy ending stories.

Okonkwo’s action towards Ikemefuna totally scared me and ruined what I actually expected Okonkwo to be like. I know he is a village savior and a very strong man, but from my perspective, I think he has too much pride of himself and he’s not thinking about others. In other words, he a selfish man who wants to show how amazing he from being a ‘hero’. I think he’s immature in a way, I mean who would beat up your own wife just because of a small little thing. Right before Ikemefuna got killed, it said, “My father, they have killed me! As he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak.” (Achebe 61) Okonkwo killed him just for himself. He wanted to be in the fame that he had killed someone, wow what a stupid decision. Ikemefuna had done marvelous things in Okonkwo’s family but at the end, all he got was a machete cutting down his body. What a shame for Okonkwo.

  17. 1. Explain how the passing of time is represented by the wrestling matches. Think generationally.

During the wrestling matches the constant drum beats are herd. From page 45 to page 51, you see that the drums are used to tell from the beginning to the end of the wrestling matches, which I can interpret, that the drums are representing the passing time. “They were possessed by the spirit of the drums” (Achebe 46). The beating drums are building up the audiences’ excitement and their tensions as the quote describes. Wrestling matches starting from the younger ones to the group leaders at the end, hits the climax and as soon as the matches were finished, the drums had stopped and every body went home.

    2. Is Nwoye starting to grow up? (52-52)

With out doubt. “On receiving such a message through a younger brother or sister, Nwoye would feign annoyance and grumble aloud about women and their troubles” (Achebe 52). Nwoye’s father was very proud with Nwoye, when Okonkwo knew about Nwoye being irritated by the women, because that meant Nwoye would be able to control his women in the future and become the head of the clan. He is still learning and growing up to become a man by spending time with his father and listening to Okonkwo’s stories for men and his experiences on the battlefield.

    3. Does Nwoye want to please his father? How? Why?

Yes. “And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women’s stories. And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him” (Achebe 54). This is the quote, which is the evidence for me to know about Nwoye’s mind. As the quote makes it clear Nowye is trying to be a good son and the future leader of his clan. He acts like he has only interests in very masculine things and not a single thing that a woman would like. Every thing is done just to make his father, Okonkwo, very proud of his own son.

    4. After our in-depth analysis of Okonkwo, are you surprised by his actions concerning Ikemefuma?

Yes. “He heard Ikemefuna cry, ‘My father, they have killed me!’ ”(Achebe 61) A boy who was so close and was calling Okonkwo a father, was cut down by Okonkwo with out any hesitation. That did surprise me. It was such a tragic scene to read. But may be by thinking differently, what Okonkwo has done was to stop Ikemefuna from suffering and being killed by the other men.

  18. 1) The wrestling time are mostly represented by the sound of the drums. The drums is played during a match, with the help of audience cheering and claping. "At last the teams daced into a circle and the crowed roar and clapped. The drums rose to frenzy" (Achebe 47). This qoute represent the time and the experience of the spectator.

    2) Nwoye did grow up, "to do one of difficult and masculine tasks in home"(Achebe 52). This quote tells me that Nwoye is not a child anymore because, a hard task mostly is given to a interlectual person because without it someone is going to get hurt. And people ask Nwoye to do, so he need to be trustworthy to do so.

    3) Nwoye did want to please his father, he was over the girlish stories, because Nwoye wanted to furfil his father wishes, by being a man. He used to like grilish stories, but after his dad said he wanted him to be a man, he changed his presective and stop being weak and start becoming a man. And he also became a proper man to stop his father from beating him.

    4) I was surprise because from the start till page 62, Okonkwo had to different charactristic. He is tough and also sensitive. For me that is just a normal person because a person can't be just tough, they always have two sides of their life. And Okonkwo liked his children who is not a disappoinment.

  19. 1.The wrestling match was a very popular event in their area, so people would get excited when the match is about to begin. It doesn’t really matter the gender or the age, if you living in those village you’ll love the wrestling. “The air, which had been stretched taut with excitement, relxed again.” (Achebe 48). The audience would only appease during the resting time.

2.Nwoye is definitely growing up in chapter seven, mostly was because of Ikemefuna. To Nwoye, Ikemefuna was like a big brother and changed him. “He made him feel grown-up; and they no longer spent the evening in mother’s hut while she cooked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi..." (Achebe 52). This show the change that’s happening to Nwoye, his way is change more toward his father’s way.
3.Nwoye is trying to please his father. “And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women’s stories. And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him.” (Achebe 54). Before, Nwoye had never felt a bit of love from his father so he wanted to show his father that he is a man. In order to do that, Nwoye had to mistreated woman like how his father does.
4.It was no surprise that Okonkwo would treat Ikemefuna this way. “Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak.” (Achebe 61). Okonkwo doesn’t show any emotion unless its anger, if he shows other one then he think it’s a sign of weakness. Although he kind of like Ikemefuna, but he think his pride was more important than this boy’s life.

  20. 1.
The game was very excited “there were seven drums and they were arranged according to their sizes in a long wooden basket.” It show during the game was very splendid and people clap their and lots of voice. ( page 46)
    2.
Yes, Nwoye he grew, became the strong man, and be the man can control his women and child. And OKonkwo, he was happy Nwoye can grumbling to women “And so he was always happy when he heard him grumbling about women.” ( page 53)
    3.
Yes, he did please to his fathe “And when he did this he saw that his father was please, and no longer rebuked him or beat him.” ( page 54) I think in this quit, he want to get something from his father, and Nwoye’s father looks happy, and he had to try more for him.
    4.
I’m really surprised about Okonkwo killing Ikemefuna, because I thought Okonkwo and Ikemefuna was good friend, Okonkwo he is the person who change Ikemefuna be the man, he doesn’t look like the person who can really kill the person, actually is Ikemefuna.

  21. 1).chapter six started with a wresting matches where everybody gather in a circle"they stood round in a huge circle leaving the center of the playground free"(Achebe 46). It seems like a tradition that the village does it every year. the drummer lined up together and the audiences are full of excitement and that matches begins. The wrestling match remind Okonkwo that he used to bin in the matches.

    2) Because of Ikemefuna, Nwoye had sort of developed a brothership in between. Ikemefuna's respect influence Nwoye's attitude towards his father. And Okonkwo response Nwoye by not beating or rebuke him anymore"And he when he did this he saw his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked him or beat him."(Achebe 54)

    3) According to answer 2, Nwoye is trying to prove that his no longer the lazy boy his father though he was before. Nwoye realized that all those children/women stories was foolish and Okonkwo was quite impressed"That was the kind of story that Nwoye loved. But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man"(Achebe 54).

    4) Nor really, although Ikemefuna stayed with Okonkwo's family for long Okonkwo still consider him as a outsider. Okonkwo follows the elders of the village, which he was put to a dilemma. however,as a worrier Okonkwo made his mind and killed Ikemefuna, but still has hard feelings for it' Okonkwo did not taste any food for two days after the death of Ikemefuna"(Achebe 63).

  22. 1. Everyone enjoyed the wrestling match. "The whole village turned out on the ilo, men women and children." (Achebe 46). The wrestling match is very important to Okonkwo because this is where he beat the Amalinze the Cat, one of the greatest wrestlers of all time. Even now, people enjoy this. "There were seven drums and they were arranged accordingly to their sizes in a long wooden basket. Later, the two great wrestlers fought, Okafo and Ikezue.

    2. Nwoye has grown a lot and still is growing due to Ikemefuna. "He grew rapidly like a yam tendril in the rainy season, and was full of the sap of life." (Achebe 52). He is also starting to respect his father. Nwoye is becoming more mature, more confident and hardworking young man. Ikefumena wants Nwoye to be a respectful person.

    3. Nwoye wants to please his father. He shows many manly things. "He now knew that they for foolish for women and children, and he now knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women's stories. And when he did this he saw that his father was pleased, and no longer rebuked or beat him." (Achebe 54)

    4. I was very surprised with his decision. Ikemefuna showed respect to everyone. He even taught lots of things to Nwoye, Okonkwo's son. Because of Ikemefuna, Nwoye is no longer a lazy person but a mature hardworking man. "The next day a group of elders from all the nine villages of Umuofia came to Okonkwo's house early in the morning, and before they began to speak in low tones Nwoye and Ikemefuna were sent out." (Achebe 57). "Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak." (Achebe 61). Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna.

  23. 1. Chapter six dealt with a wrestling match which took place on ilo, the village playground. Villagers were all excited to see the matches and some even went to the ilo early in order to get a place to sit and watch. Time quickly passes during the wrestling match and one of the reason the time passes quickly is because the first three matches are by the young boys in the village which ended fast. "They were not the real wrestlers; they merely set the scene. Within a short time the first two bouts were over. But the third created a big sensation even among the elders who did not usually show their excitement" (Achebe 47). This quote explains how the match ended and also how the audiences are into the matches. Usually when you are into something or really concentrated, you tend to forget what time it is and ust keep on doing it. There is another quote that explains how the time is passing by during the wrestling match, "The air, which had been stretched taut with excitement, relaxed again. It was as if water had been poured on the tightened skin of a drum. Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them" (Achebe 48). This states how much the villagers were enjoying the matches and giving supports, not even thinking about how much time has past.

    2. Nwoye is gradually growing up, one reason is he knows that his father, Okonkwo wants Nwoye to grow up and be like his father, and if not, Okonkwo will hit him and attack with words that man should not weep and be lazy. "Okonkwo was inwardly pleased with his son's development, and he knew it was due to Ikemefuna" (Achebe 52). This one sentence tells the reader that Nwoye has changed, since Okonkwo thought that his son have changed and developed.

    3. Nwoye indeed wants to please his father by showing Okonkwo that he have grown stronger and became a man. "Nothing pleased Nwoye now more than to be sent for by his mother or another of his father's wives to do one of those difficult and masculine tasks in the home... Nwoye would feign annoyance and grumble aloud about women and their troubles" (Achebe 52). This shows that Nwoye will be able to control women soon. Also by listening to Okonkwo's stories about hunting. That would please his father Okonkwo since listening to his story meant Nwoye have interest in what men are supposed to do.

    4. I was not surprised by Okonkwo's action towards Ikemefuna. Even though Okonkwo was pleased by Ikemefuna since he have changed his son and did what he was told to do, but when it comes to war and rituals, Okonkwo cannot refuse to do (in this case, killing Ikemefuna), since he does not want to show the others his weakness. "Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down. He was afraid of being thought weak" (Achebe 61). Showing weakness to others is the worst thing for him to do in the world. After reading the scene where Ezeudu called Okonkwo, telling Okokwo they will kill Ikemefuna, I knew that Okonkwo will attend that to keep his impression of being always strong.

  24. 1, In chapter six, the wrestling match starts and takes place on the village ilo, which begins with matches between boys ages fifteen and sicteen. This quote at the second paragraph of chapter six“Three men beat them with sticks, working feverishly from one drum to another “ It shows the situation at the wrestling ring and how the wrestling match is going appear in the future.
2,Nwoye has grown a lot since first chapter, on the page 52 “He grew rapidly like a yam tendril in the rainy season, and was full of the sap of life” as I said from this quote I could tell that he has grown a lot.
3,Nwoye is Okonkwo’s oldest son, he struggles with his powerful successful father. Since Ikemefuna came to his village he became like an brother and teaches him a gentle form of best masculinity.
4, I was really surprised by Okonkwo’s action towards Ikemefuma, but Okonkwo had to kill Ikemefuma because the oracle concludedthat Ikemefuma must die. Okonkwo killed Ikemefuma to show that hes not weak to his villagers

    1. The time passed quikly during westling matches. "As soon as the two boys closed in, one of them did smothing which no one could describe becaused it had been as quick as a flash." (Achebe 47), this quote tells how quickly time has passed during wlestling muches. Also evryone was in to the wletling matches so that people would forget passing of time, which makes people feeling time is passing quickly.

    2. Nwoye is gronwing up in good way by influence from Ikefuma. Before Ikefuma comes to family, Nwoye was lazy and careless. However since Ikfuma came to his family, he started to get good influence from Ikefuma and grown up. Also Okonkwo is happy about change of Nwoye.

    3. Yes Nwoye wants to please his father. "He knew tha his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for woman's stories." (Achebe 54) This quote tells how Nwoye tried to react to what Okokwo wanted him to be and wanted to get love from Okonkwo. Therefore eventhough Nwoye changed in good way and became nice to women, he still wanted to get love from Okonkwo so he hide his kindness to women and tried to become like what Okonkwo wanted him to be.

    4. I was still surprise even though I knew Okonkwo was going to kill Ikefuma from reading critic review of this story. Ikefuma respected Okonkwo alot and he thought Okonkwo as his father. Also Okonkowo seems to like Ikefuma and he was happy about change of Nwoye by influence from Ikefuma. However when Umofia desided that they gonna kill Ikefuma, Okonkwo was surprise but he was a man and he could not change his way of thinking of being man. Therefore Okonkwo killed Ikefuma.

  26. 1. In chapter six, time passed very fast. The whole chapter was about the wrestling match, where everyone was very excited. “The air, which had been stretched taut with excitement, relaxed again. It was as if water had been poured on the tightened skin of a drum. Many people looked around, perhaps for the first time, and saw those who stood or sat next to them” (Achebe 48). This quote express how much people were into the wrestling matches. People were too excited that they didn’t know whom they were standing next to. Usually when you are having fun, you lose track of time and time passes very fast, and I thought that was what was happening in chapter six.

    2. Nwoye is starting to grow up. The beginning of chapter seven explains how much Nwoye grew up. “He made him feel grown-up; and they no longer spent the evenings in mother’s hut while she cooked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi, or watched him as he tapped his palm tree for the evening wine.” (Achebe 52) This quote tells Nwoye is starting to become manly with Ikemefuna’s help; he spent less time with his mother and is starting to follow his father Okonkwo. “Okonkwo was inwardly pleased at his son’s development, and he knew it was due to Ikemefuna.” (Achebe 52) This quote also shows that he is growing up and Okonkwo actually sees that.

    3. Nwoye wants to please his father. “But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man. And so he feigned that he no longer cared for women’s stories.” (Achebe 54) This quote tells that Nwoye is trying to please Okonkwo by acting like a man by listening to Okonkwo’s story about wars and fights rather than women’s stories. “Nwoye would feign annoyance and grumble aloud about women and their troubles.” (Achebe 52) This quote also shows that he is starting to become manly by talking about women. He knows that Okonkwo is pleased by those actions so he keeps on doing it so that his father will accept him as a real man.

    4. I was not surprised about what Okonkwo did to Ikemefuna. Since he believed that showing weakness is a sign of failure, although Ikemefuna is one of the best son, I believe he would kill Ikemefuna if people were around him to not show his weakness. Also by looking at him for the past seven chapters, I know that he is a type of person who follows the rituals and what he is told to do so I was not surprised about what he did to Ikemefuna.

  28. 1. Chapter 6, is about wrestling matches with gathering with huge crowd. This chapter shows a passage from childhood into adulthood for the boys. This wrestling matches were held every year and purpose of doing this event in each village is to show their strength and courage.
There were a lot of audiences who watched wrestling. in that event, some young men participated. "Their body shone with sweat, and they took up fans and began to fan themselves." (48 Achebe) This quote shows that boys were wrestling intensity.

    2. Nwoye had grown up. In this quote, "He made him feel grown-up; and they no longer spent the evenings in mother's hut while she cooked, but now sat with Okonkwo in his obi, or watched him as he tapped his palm thee for the evening wine." (52 Achebe) Umuofia made Nwoye's growth because he was being like Nwoye's eldest brother.

    3. I think Nwoye wants to please his father. "That was the kind of story that Nwoye loved. But he now knew that they were for foolish women and children, and he knew that his father wanted him to be a man." (54 Achibe) This quote shows that Nwoye wanted his father to be a good father because he never had fulfilled to his father but he wants his father to be better.

    4. Yes. “He heard Ikemefuna cry, 'My father, they have killed me!' As he ran towards him. Dazed with fear, Okonkwo drew his machete and cut him down." (61 Achebe) It was surprised that Okonkwo killed Ikemefuna. This is because Ikemefuna was likely precious son for Okonkwo.
